Some More Malaysian Bird Photos

Here are some more Malaysian bird photos from my recent trip, these were taken at Kuala Selangor Nature Park, Taman Negara and near to Kuala Lumpur and are in no particular order!

Black-capped Kingfisher
Several seen well at Kuala Selangor, though this one was pretty distant. Usually pretty vocal staying a good distance away!

Banded Kingfisher
One that I really wanted to see, this one was near Kuala Lumpur but also saw another at Taman Negara (plus was heard fairly regularly around the Mutiara). This one was fairly high up in the mid-canopy hence the not great photo.

 Black-thighed Falconet
A totally bonkers bird, not much bigger than a sparrow! Seen hawking for dragonflies and usually perched up on a snag high above the canopy

Black-thighed Falconet
Different view of the bird above. I'd forgotten just how small these birds are!

Blue-throated Bee-eater
Fairly common at Selangor and Taman Negara - a pretty smart-looking bird.

Blue-tailed Bee-eater
Quite a big bird. Very smart and common and widespread. I even had a couple hunting around the park in front of the Petronas Twin Towers!

Buffy Fish Owl
Got a shock when I walked round the corner in a trail at Selangor and came face to face with this huge beast!

Collared Kingfisher
Fairly common at Selangor and very vocal though often difficult to get close too!

Common Iora
A bit like a miniature oriole. Has a really nice song. Fairly common at Selangor.

Coppersmith's Barbet
A really cool little bird with a very loud voice! Would generally show well.

Dollarbird
Got fairly close to this one as I rounded a corner on the trail.

Green Broadbill
Like all the Broadbills I saw in Malaysia this was pretty stunning! It reminded me of a Cotinga due to its head shape and behaviour but was fairly shy compared to the others. Fantastic colours.

Grey-headed Canary-Flycatcher
A smart little vocal bird allowing quite a close approach.

Little Bronze-Cuckoo
Tiny bird that showed really nicely. Very responsive to imitation of it's call and happy to sit a few feet away from me!

Velvet-fronted Nuthatch
Another favourite of mine, just as excited when I found this as I was when I had my first one in India a few years back. Another quick mover.

Rhinoceros Hornbill
A giant of a bird, absolutely huge but incredibly could just vanish even in a small tree as in the photo. Great fun watching this beast eat tiny little berries by tossing them up into the air then catching them!

Oriental Magpie-Robin
The commonest/most widespread bird in the country I'd say, seen pretty much everywhere. A great song and a friendly little bird.
