Eastern Black Redstart (Holy Island)
This morning Dave and I decided to head north to Holy Island, Northumberland in order to try and connect with the Eastern Black Redstart, Phoenicurus ochruros phoenicuroides. We were not disappointed with stunning close up views of this mega rare bird. I'll look into the taxonomy of Black Restart in a future post but for now here are a few photos taken on my phone. I bumped into Andy Vinson and Tristan Reid so there will definitely be some much much better photos out there (hopefully I'll get one on my blog too).
I work as a Senior Ornithologist for a consultancy in Yorkshire and as a tour leader/bird guide for Tico Tours.
When doing consultancy work I carry out a range of bird surveys and write up my findings into reports suitable for submission with planning applications. This work gets me birding in a great range of locations and invariably leads to some interesting avian discoveries.
When working for Tico Tours I'm doing what I love, showing and teaching people about birds around the world, whether in the Neotropics, Afrotropics or Western Palearctic.
Originally from Warwickshire, I have been birding for 23 years all over the world, spending time living in Kenya and Costa Rica as well as visiting many global birding hotspots. I have a BSc (Hons) Degree in Ornithology and am a full member of IEEM. I've been living in Yorkshire for the last 12 years, currently in North Duffield, a small village located within the Lower Derwent Valley - a spectacular birding location.
Thanks for reading and I hope you like what you see. Why not become a follower and come back and check out what I'm up to, spring is almost here and the local birding is about to get interesting...
