Harlequin Duck Twitch

Me and my old mate Lewis went up to Aberdeen this morning to chase after the Harlequin Duck that's been there for a while this winter.

There's been less than 20 records of Harlequin in the UK. Although not as flashy as the last one (North Uist 2013), this was at least very approachable. It showed very nicely down to about 20ft! Got a couple of record shots below (will check through my other photos when I get home!).

Also had a really smart couple of Dipper on the river that came nice and close.

Little Beauty

Ended the year with a nice bonus UK tick, as did many lucky birders.

At some point when I was in Australia (November) I got news of a Little Bustard being in the UK, but it didn't hang around and so that was that, or so I thought (plus I was seeing lots of great birds so didn't really care!). But then one was reported on the south coast near the end of December - the same, or another? It got me a little more interested... But I had no real intentions of driving to the south coast.

The next day, New Years Eve, one was found near Flamborough in East Yorkshire. So I shot across there and in no time at all I was enjoying nice views of this very rare bird to the UK - the first in Yorkshire since 1956!

In the rush to get to the site I forgot my camera, so I've just got a little record shot (below) from my phone -admittedly it does look a bit like a female Pheasant in this picture!

A really great find, and re-find so thanks to everyone involved. The bird hung around on the 31st and was also present on the 1st January 2015 for those who couldn't get there on the 31st. However is was not there on the 2nd. It was the first mainland twitchable bird for years - possibly since about 1996! It was the first I'd seen for a number of years, since I was in Spain/Portugal.

Is it Autumn Already?

I had a really productive June and after last weekends twitch (details here and here) thought that would be that until September/October time. Well, turns out I was wrong!

Got back home after walking the dogs to hear that there was a Black-winged Pratincole in County Durham - a potential lifer for me. A quick check on the map revealed it was fairly close to home so I decided to brave the Tour de France traffic and take a punt on it.

The roads were practically clear and a short while later I was on site looking at a distant Lapwing flock. The Pratincole still being present, just out of view. After not too long something flushed the Lapwings and the Black-winged Pratincole was picked up briefly in flight a couple of times before the flock settled back down. It was always pretty distant but could be seen preening, stretching its wings out, showing all dark wings with white rump.

I decided to re-position myself a bit closer to the birds chosen field where I got much better views of it on the ground. It was still generally keeping fairly low but would occasionally would stick its head up and look up though didn't look too bothered when some of the Lapwings were flushed by various large birds flying overhead and never really looked like doing anything. I grabbed one record shot on my phone as it was keeping low, but it is pretty poor, even by my standards! I think you can almost tell that it's not a Lapwing!

I think this was a first for County Durham and about the 42nd UK record; it was also a UK tick and lifer for me (#2550) but more importantly it was a grip-back on Dave after he got the Norfolk bird in 2009 that I couldn't get to.

Yellow-rumped Warbler

It's been a busy week at work so today was the first chance I got to get up to Durham for the Yellow-rumped Warbler that's been about for a few weeks (but only became available last Sunday). The bird appears to be a first winter male Myrtle Warbler. Will be worth another look if it can be tempted to hang around for another couple of months!

The bird was easy to find, as it was coming to a set of bird-feeders put out to stop people looking into gardens and hopefully make the bird easier to connect with, this worked very well. Unfortunately it was mainly a case of looking into the sun so I didn't get any decent shots - a couple of poor record shots below. The bird did show well though and was quite vocal and easy to pick up on call. First time I've seen one of these since I was in Costa Rica.
